Darul Uloom Deoband is a very well-known Islamic institution. It is located in Deoband, Uttar Pradesh, India. It started with the establishment of a Madrassah at Deoband on May 30, 1866. This madrassah promotes Islamic education, culture, and heritage. This institute also focuses on guiding its students about spirituality.

It is the largest Islamic Institution in the subcontinent. Its founders are Muhammad Qasim Nanotvi and Rashid Ahmad Gangohi. It is one of the largest and most influential Islamic institutions in the world.

Background of the Darul Uloom Deoband Movement

On one end the Aligarh movement was only promoting Western Education, and on the other, the Christian missionaries were trying to convert the Muslims to Christianity.  In such a situation, a movement was needed to expand the sphere of Islam. He further says that Muslims were deprived of their rightful place in the education by the British colonial authorities.

The curriculum of this Islamic Institute included education in Islamic theology, jurisprudence, and Arabic literature. Moreover, it trained its scholars to learn about the political and social issues of their time.

Charities of Darul Uloom Deoband

Maulana Syed Muhammad Rabey Hasani Nadwi believes that Darul Uloom Deoband was also a charitable organization. It provided food, shelter, and education to the poor and needy. It also helped the orphans and destitute children.

During the natural disasters this institute provided help to the affected communities. Further, it provided healthcare services and medical assistance. Dar-ul-Uloom also worked tirelessly for the resettlement of the affected population. For example, the charitable work of Dar-ul-Uloom during the famine of 1877.

During the British Era, Muslims were involved in various un-Islamic practices and social evils. These included casteism and bid’ah. Ulema of Darul Uloom Deoband tried to eradicate them by promoting an authentic Islamic society.
